This year’s Spring Conference Committee is proud to present Jill Porter, Suffolk County Probation Department Gang Intelligence Officer, as our keynote speaker. Jill has presented her “Gang Awareness” workshop at Spring Conference several times in the past. It has always been incredibly interesting and an outstanding success. This year Jill is going to tie in her gang awareness with our Conference theme, “It Takes a Village . . . Youth and Community.” She will discuss all the necessary elements in raising productive members of society, including parental involvement, education, and female empowerment.
Jill Porter has been a member of the Suffolk County Probation Department for the past fifteen years. She began as a Probation Investigator working in the Cohalan Court Complex. It was during this period that she noticed a large amount of gang members involved in the Court system. She began keeping track of her observations and presented them to her superiors. As a result, she was the main impetus in the development of gang training for the Probation Department staff, other outside law enforcement agencies, community organizations, and school staff. As the gang situation grew so did the development of gang awareness programs for youth. Jill was sworn in as a Suffolk County Probation Officer in April of 2001.
